ALICE IN CHAINS, ANSO’S EARS: A LOVE AFFAIR RENEWED
At the Golden Gods thing back in April, I really perked up when Alice In Chains’ Jerry Cantrell came down the press line. It was surprising and weird because I was not aware that his band remained significant to me.
Absolute Horror
“Terror is a man” and horror is our fascination for it. Whatevercomes out of its fanged gnawing mouth leaves no absolute space for thinking, its awesome indescribability drawn from the probability of the unseen or even the unimaginable come alive. This re-engagement with the morbid fantasy of prepubescent awakening by Fangoria and Clive Barker mixed in with the horror vacui- jeepney graphics profusely converge in Louie Cordero’s Absolute Horror.

Pelican Interview from Splendid
In its second full-length, Chicago’s Pelican redefines metallic heaviness, interpersing onslaughts of majestically slow, sonically overwhelming loudness with periods of surprising delicacy. The foursome — Laurent Lebec and Trevor Brauw on guitars, and brothers Larry and Brian Herweg forming the rhythm section — came of age in Chicago’s hardcore punk scene, but today they’re making experimental, almost orchestral soundscapes. This is epic music, with dizzying crescendos, long, slow-mutating riffs and an inevitable surge to triumph. It has all the characteristics of metal, but becomes something grander, purer and more beautiful.
